Major Renovations

Major Renovations · Home Additions · Western Suburbs

Love where you live. Change how your home works.

SG Home Builders plans and delivers substantial home renovations for Chicagoland homeowners who need more space, better flow and a home that fits the way they live today.

A design-build approach

Renovation requires more than choosing new finishes.

A major renovation affects the way an entire home functions. Walls move. Structural systems change. Mechanical equipment must be reconsidered. Existing conditions create challenges that cannot always be seen from the surface.

That is why SG brings architecture, interior design, budgeting and construction strategy together early. We work through the difficult questions before construction begins, so the finished space feels intentional rather than pieced together.

Whether we are expanding the footprint, rebuilding the first floor or transforming multiple levels, the goal is the same: create a home that looks cohesive, functions better and feels as though it was always meant to be that way.

The best renovation plans balance what you want to change with what is worth preserving.

What we build

Renovations designed around the entire home.

Our renovation work is best suited for substantial projects that require coordinated design, structural planning and professional project leadership.

01 · WHOLE-HOME RENOVATIONS

Reimagine how the entire home lives.

Coordinated renovations across multiple rooms or levels, including new layouts, updated systems, interior finishes and exterior improvements brought together under one comprehensive plan.

02 · HOME ADDITIONS

Create more space without making it feel added on.

First-floor additions, second-story expansions, primary suites, family rooms, mudrooms and garage additions designed to connect naturally with the architecture and flow of the existing home.

03 · KITCHEN & FIRST-FLOOR RECONFIGURATIONS

Go beyond replacing cabinets and countertops.

Structural wall removal, room relocation, expanded kitchens, improved circulation and connected living spaces designed as one cohesive first-floor renovation.

04 · PRIMARY SUITES & SECOND FLOORS

Make private spaces more functional and complete.

Bedroom, bathroom, closet and laundry reconfigurations that improve privacy, storage and daily function while maintaining a consistent design throughout the upper level.

05 · FINISHED BASEMENTS

Add purposeful living space below grade.

High-quality lower levels with entertainment areas, bars, guest suites, bathrooms and family spaces designed with the same level of care as the finished floors above.

06 · SPECIALTY SPACES

Build around the way your family spends its time.

Golf simulators, home gyms, wine rooms, offices, wellness spaces, theaters and other custom environments integrated into a larger renovation plan.

Project alignment

Is SG the right fit for your renovation?

The right partnership begins with an honest understanding of project scope, priorities and expectations.

SG may be a strong fit when:

  • Your renovation affects several rooms, levels or major systems.
  • The project includes structural changes or an addition.
  • You want architecture, interiors and construction coordinated.
  • You value planning, transparency and consistent communication.
  • You want one team to guide the project from concept through completion.

SG may not be the best fit when:

  • The project is limited to repairs or isolated cosmetic updates.
  • You are primarily seeking labor for owner-supplied materials.
  • Design and material decisions will be made during construction.
  • The scope is focused on the lowest initial price rather than a coordinated result.
  • The project does not require full-service construction management.
Our renovation process

Clarity before construction.

Major renovations involve hundreds of connected decisions. Our process puts those decisions in the right order.

Phase 01

Consultation & Alignment

We discuss your goals, current frustrations, desired investment range and the practical realities of renovating your particular home.

Phase 02

Existing-Condition Review

We evaluate the home, visible conditions, potential structural challenges and other factors that may influence design, budget and construction.

Phase 03

Design Integration

Architecture, interior design and construction strategy are developed together so the project remains cohesive and buildable.

Phase 04

Budget & Selections

Scope, specifications and finish decisions are documented while project costs are reviewed against the evolving design.

Phase 05

Preconstruction Planning

Permits, trade coordination, ordering, logistics and project sequencing are organized before major construction begins.

Phase 06

Construction & Communication

SG leads the fieldwork with structured updates covering what happened, what comes next and what decisions are needed.

Common questions

Before planning a major renovation.

How early should we contact SG?

Ideally, SG should be involved before architectural drawings and major design decisions are finalized. Early builder involvement allows design, construction strategy and budget expectations to be evaluated together.

Do we need to have an architect already?

No. We can begin by discussing the project and determining what design resources will be required. When an architect is already involved, SG can collaborate with that professional during the planning process.

Can we remain in the home during construction?

It depends on the scope, construction sequence and which systems will be affected. Some projects can be phased around an occupied home, while major whole-home renovations may require temporary relocation. We discuss those logistics during planning.

How long does a major renovation take?

Timelines vary based on design, permitting, structural complexity, material lead times and the overall scope. SG develops a project-specific timeline after the design and construction plan are sufficiently defined.

Does SG handle small remodeling projects?

SG is primarily structured for substantial renovations, additions and coordinated projects involving multiple trades. Isolated repairs and small cosmetic updates are generally not the best fit for our full design-build process.

Can homeowners provide their own materials or subcontractors?

To maintain scheduling, accountability and construction quality, SG manages the labor, trade partners and material procurement included within our project scope.
